Every Kid Can Cook Receives Mayor’s Business Recognition Award

Each year, the Mayor of the City of Baltimore joins with the Greater Baltimore Committee and the Baltimore Development Corporation to recognize businesses that have demonstrated significant corporate leadership and service to improve the quality of life in Baltimore. The awards are given for specific activities or projects that have significantly benefited the citizens of Baltimore City and are outside the regular mission or day-to-day work or activities of the business.  Mayor Jack Young will join the Baltimore Development Corporation and the Greater Baltimore Committee in presenting the awards.

Flavor Uma’s Every Kid Can Cook (EKCC) program is honored to be one of the winners of this award this year.  In 2018, EKCC provided 5,700 youth with healthy cooking classes, demonstrations, healthy tastings, and nutritional education. EKCC programs operate in 11 schools (5 in Maryland, 3 in Atlanta, and 2 in New Orleans) with 100 Kid Ambassador Nutrition Leaders. EKCC is on track to provide 50,000 youth nationally and 25,000 youth in Maryland with cooking experiences, healthy tastings, and nutrition education.

On October 4, 2019, Flavor Uma and EKCC supported the Journey Home project’s successful attempt to break a Guinness World Record for the most people – 478 individuals – breaking break to bring attention to the issue of homelessness in Baltimore.  The Flavor Uma and EKCC team handed out lunches at the event, mobilized to support event logistics and crowd management, and helped recruit 125 bystanders to participate in the event.
